Abstract

The paper describes the commercial relationship between the area of the Carthaginian-Punic culture and the Tyrrhenian coast of Magna Grecia, analyzes the typical evolution of transport amphorae from Punic tradition, investigates the distribution of these containers from the Archaic to the late-Hellenistic phases in Magna Grecia. Especially, on the period between the end of the fourth and the first half of the third century BC, some types of amphorae, probably delegated to the transport of salted fish, spread widely in Magna Grecia. This is probably a sign of intense commercial trade but also of a food culture that spreads from the coastal settlements of Sicily and of these of Lucania and Bruttium Tyrrhenian coast. Then, in the early imperial age, this trade is consolidated through the production and marketing of salted fish and fish sauces, much appreciated on the tables of the Romans, in the same sites and with the amphora Dressel 21/22.
